Strategy 4: List-Group-Label-Write

What is the instructional strategy?
This instructional strategy is a simple process that allows the students to organize a list of vocabulary terms from a reading passage. They are able to list or highlight key terms, group the words into purposeful categories with clear and descriptive labels. Students can then reflect on why they created those specific labels which activates prior knowledge and improves comprehension.

Why does the strategy work?
List-Group-Label-Write emphasizes critical thinking skills that recognize relationships between words. Students make meaningful connections with the words which largely supports their comprehension. Writing for reflection is also an advantageous tool to retain information.

How does it work?
1.      I will select a main topic or concept from Ellis & Esler’s (2005) World History: Connections to Today.
2.      Students will list all words they think relate to World War II on the provided chart.
3.      Students will take these words and generate meaningful lists for these words to be grouped under.
4.      Students will label each group with a clear and descriptive title or heading.
5.      Students will write reflections on why they created their specific categories.
